Success stories from Clearing at Northumbria University

As results day looms, its only natural to feel a little nervous and excited. But for some of you, it might be worry that youre feeling.

Success stories from Clearing at Northumbria University

The thought that you might not get the grades you hope for to get into your chosen university or even if you have made the wrong choice all together means the day fills you with dread – but there’s no need to panic. If you open the letter to see results that aren’t as you hoped, you are now sure you want to change your choice of university, take a deep breath and begin the UCAS clearing process.

Student’s go through the clearing process for two reasons. Some students have a change in heart in the lead up to results day and want to change course or university, while others miss out on the grades they had hoped for to get into the university they wanted to attend. According to the National Clearing Survey 2016, 33,000 students secured their university space through UCAS clearing – it’s just a new opportunity for you to find a better fit for your higher education career.

The UCAS clearing process is available to a student who has all their university choices declined, either by default or by agreement of their current institutions.. This all means that even if opening that all-important envelope feels like the end of the world, Northumbria University is keen to tell you it’s not. Northumbria University offers an extensive range of clearing courses every year – here they dispel the myth that clearing is a topic of worry or concern by discussing some of their success stories.

Emma-Jo’s Clearing Experience

Before results day, Emma-Jo had already had an offer accepted at another university – however, as results day drew closer, she realised that her original plan was not right for her and longed to attend Northumbria University instead to study Sociology.

When results day arrived, she was delighted to receive the grades she needed to apply for Northumbria’s Sociology course through clearing.

Speaking about her clearing process, Emma explained “it was more than a bit daunting before I called them. I had been so set on moving away, but sometimes you do change direction. I had the grades I needed for both universities, but just realised that my first choice wasn’t for me.”

"The team talked me through all the options I had available to me and informed me about foundation years."

Emma isn’t the only student to have changed her mind about her education path. With such a big decision to be made, Emma knew she had to make the best decision to suit her. After taking the first step to secure a new university place through clearing, Emma received the offer she hoped for from Northumbria University.

Now her university career has come to an end, Emma believes choosing to change universities and become a student at Northumbria University through clearing was one of the best decisions she ever made.

Emily’s Experience

When results day arrived for Emily, she hadn’t quite achieved the grades required to get onto the Marine Biology course she had originally hoped for – however, Emily decided to go through the UCAS clearing process and secured herself a place at Northumbria University to study Applied Science.

When Emily first opened the envelope on results day, she was upset to find out she had not got into her first-choice university. Her teachers encouraged her to go through clearing and try for a place at a university some of her friends were attending. She felt better after talking to the clearing team who talked her through all her options and helped to advise the best they could.

After assessing her options, Emily decided to enrol onto the Applied Science foundation year course at Northumbria University, so that she could get a better grounding in her dream subject.

Emily found the process very reassuring: “The team talked me through all the options I had available to me and informed me about foundation years. I got loads of advice and guidance and it really helped to chat through the process with people who were there to support me. On what was such a stressful day, I just found the team at Northumbria University so easy to talk to and they reassured me that there are other ways to get to where you want to be - you don't have to just go down one route."
